ClassGraphic Join an experienced science illustrator at the UCSC Fort Ord Natural Reserve for a guided field illustration experience and learn how to draw in the field and record the details of plants and flowers. The reserve is not open to the public, so this is a unique opportunity to explore this rare habitat and see the plant and wildlife species that depend largely on the reserve for their survival. You will learn about flower anatomy, practice field sketching and painting techniques, and practice observational drawing from live plants in their environment. Learn to identify characteristics like growth habit, leaf shape and arrangement, as well as flower shape, color, and arrangement, and how to capture light and shadow to create form. You will build up to a more in-depth study of a plant or flower using watercolor. You will have time to complete three drawings using different techniques, and gain skills using pencil, gouache, and watercolor on various papers.
All skill levels are welcome.

Your materials fee covers supplies chosen by the instructor specifically for nature illustration, and you are also required to bring some basic supplies to class. Please see the online class listing for details about what supplies you need to bring, what supplies are provided, what to wear, and a link and map for the meeting place.

There will be some walking, about a half mile or so. You will be walking on well-established trails on sandy soils, and the walk is easy to moderately strenuous.
