Come dive into the process of handmade paper in this all-new immersive workshop. From mixing the fiber, to forming the wet pulp, and adding inclusions, you will create beautiful sheets of handmade paper. Using fibers that have been used traditionally for over 500 years, you will learn the traditional European method of making paper. You'll have the chance to see and touch plenty of samples of early papers like papyrus and kapa, and papers made from different types of pulp like cotton, abaca, and New Zealand flax. You will learn about different types of handmade paper, equipment, processes, vocabulary, the history of handmade papermaking, and about hogging and couching - yes, these are actual papermaking terms! There will be different kinds of pulp to work with, you will learn how to add inclusions like lace, flowers, leaves. You will also get the chance to use Lisa’s handmade press!
Go home with your mold and deckle (papermaking frame), a tickle, six felts, the paper you made in class (which will still need time to air dry at home), and plenty of tips and resources so you can continue making paper at home.
You will have time in class to make about six pieces of paper with some different inclusions, and there will be plenty of supplies to make more as time allows.
