Come learn about the birds our Cuban neighbors call the “Zum-zums”, and their absolutely fascinating biological characteristics! Restricted to the Americas, these incredible avian acrobats hover, fly backwards (even upside-down!), endure a metabolic marathon that may only narrowly permit them to survive through a single day. They exhibit plumages that exceed that of Birds-of-Paradise, and are often even iridescent. Several of the more than 360 described species carry names of precious gems, reflecting their unique, brilliant feathery.
This class is scheduled at Cabrillo’s Horticulture Center in the hopes you will catch the Allen’s hummingbirds, which are migratory and come up from Southern California, and our resident Anna’s Hummingbird. Join us for an afternoon overlooking the entire campus and the Monterey Bay region, where there may be opportunities to view hummingbirds in flight as they feed from the large collection of salvias.
