Basketry is one of our oldest art forms. Baskets serve as functional vessels, sculptural objects and a vehicle for cultural and social exchange. Sasha will guide you through the making of two emblematic basketry techniques, twining and coiling. You will complete a twined basket koozie, and begin a coiled pine needle tray. Materials will be provided to complete both baskets, including reed, pine needles, waxed linen, a mason jar and a needle. Explore organic forms and the work of contemporary artists who combine art, architecture, science and tradition in their craft as you make your own baskets that will become woven into your daily life. Strategies for incorporating natural, wild crafted, and recycled materials into your weaving, and other resources for continuing projects, will also be shared.
