Sketching with Watercolor, Pen and Ink

ClassGraphic Watercolor, pen, and ink are the perfect portable media through which any place or setting can become a springboard for a spontaneous depiction full of life. Join Bonni at the beautiful Horticulture Center, with sweeping views of Monterey Bay, to learn several approaches combining watercolor paint, pen, and water-soluble ink to produce dynamic results. Through demonstrations and practice in class, you will learn simple ways to launch into using pen and ink, discover the power of the imperfect line, and how a simple blush of color can convey so much!  To help with the drawing process of the basic shapes, simple images will be available to trace for those who choose to use them.

All skill levels are welcome! Please wear comfortable shoes and clothes. Bring a stool, a sun-hat, water, and your painting supplies.

Required materials and supplies: You are welcome to bring any watercolor sketching materials you prefer, but items below are suggested by your instructor:

Pentalic 140 lb. Watercolor Field Book, 11” X 14” (or larger)

Watercolor travel palette - This is the easiest way to go. I use a Windsor-Newton travel palette with 12 half pans as well as my regular studio palette for details. You are welcome to bring whatever you’d like to paint with; a regular small palette with wells for tube paints is fine, too.

Here’s a list of basic tube paints:

Alizarin crimson

Aurelion yellow

Cobalt blue

Permanent rose or opera

French ultramarine blue

Yellow ochre

Burnt sienna

Cerulean blue

A container for water.

Brushes - There is a tiny brush included in the palette mentioned above. I also recommend bringing a #6 and #12 round.

Speedball Calligraphy fountain pen, 1.1mm nib and package of standard sized sepia water soluble ink cartridges

Portable, foldable, lightweight chair or stool
