Building Thread Sculpture with Water Soluble Fabric

Learn to create small and medium-sized sculptural elements for clothing or fiber art using your sewing machine. You will use an embroidery hoop and water-soluble fabric as a base as you explore color, shape, and texture through stitching. You will get hands-on practice as you explore how the sizing effects of the dissolving fabric will support your thread creations as they become 3-dimensional! Heather will discuss how to create density, structure, shading, and the use of different bobbin/thread combinations, so that your sculptures come to brilliant life.
Beginning with some basic stitching samples, you will move on to making leaves, flowers, ribbon shapes, and vessels, finishing up with a simple project of your own design.You will go home with the skills and confidence to use the techniques at home, your small stitching samples, your thread sculptures of leaves and flowers, a simple thread sculpture form, and any projects you have time to complete in class.
This class is designed for students with experience using a sewing machine, experience changing stitch length, tension, and other machine settings, and who are comfortable doing free-motion stitching. Water soluble fabric and your embroidery hoop will be provided in class. Please bring seven (7) full spools of thread in five colors that you would like to work with.
The classroom is a great space to create and sew, with lots of space to spread out, plenty of Bernina sewing machines, large cutting tables, ironing boards and irons, great music, good company, as well as basic sewing supplies and tools to help you reach your sewing goals.
