ClassGraphic Learn basic watercolor techniques, experiment with bright, crisp colors, and find your unique visual voice as you paint the beautiful organic shapes and textures of fresh, seasonal fruits and vegetables. You may bring your favorite produce, or work from the fresh produce provided in class. Join Bonni at the beautiful Horticulture Center, with sweeping views of Monterey Bay, as you learn how to create different watercolor effects. Through glazing multiple layers, applying watercolor wet into wet, you will learn to get creative inside of the structure of the organic shapes! To help with the drawing process of the basic shapes, simple images will be available to trace for those who choose to use them.

Students will learn about materials, become acquainted with watercolor techniques they can use at home, and will have time to complete at least one “take home” piece. All levels are welcome, no prior experience necessary!

Please bring a brown bag lunch for our mid-day break.

Materials and supplies list:

One sheet Arches or Fabriano 140 cold pressed watercolor paper.  Large is good - gives you plenty of room to play with paint!   We’ll cut this into 4 smaller pieces.

Board to attach watercolor paper to - about 16” X 24”

Tape or clips to attach paper to board

Watercolor paints: The easiest way to go is a Windsor-Newton travel palette with 12 half pans.  You are welcome to bring whatever you’d like to paint with; a regular small palette with wells for tube paints is fine, too.  A list of suggested tube paints is below:

alizarin crimson

aurelion yellow

cobalt blue

permanent rose or opera

French ultramarine blue

yellow ochre

burnt sienna

brushes

#6 round

#12 round

Pencil

Eraser

Paper towels

Container for water

Lenz Art is the local art supply store that I recommend to pick up these materials.

Parking is enforced 7 days a week on the Cabrillo Campus. Please carefully read the signage in areas where you park. Daily parking permits are $4.00 and can be purchased in any of the student parking lots from parking permit dispensers. Daily permits are only good for the date of purchase. Permit dispensers only accept credit and debit cards, no cash.

In alignment with public health guidelines, in-person classes may occur with modifications. Please review the In-Person COVID-19 Guidelines prior to attending class for the most up-to-date information on Extension's policies, procedures, and expectations.
