ClassGraphic Do you want to start keeping bees, but aren’t sure if it’s right for you? Are you determined to start your own hive, but just aren’t sure how, or what to do first? Join Emily at the beautiful Horticulture Center, with sweeping views of Monterey Bay, as she guides you through the practical aspects of starting a honey bee hive, including site selection for a hive, different styles of bee hives, and where to source equipment. You will also learn about the different types of starter colonies and how to install them. The class will also touch on what to check for one to two months post-install, the seasonality of beekeeping, where to get connected with local bee resources in our area, and recommended reading.

You will begin in the classroom, then head out for a “hive dive” at the hives maintained by Emily at Cabrillo’s Horticulture Center.
