Owls of the Central Coast at Elkhorn Slough Reserve

« back to classes page
ClassGraphic You will begin at the Elkhorn Slough Reserve Conference Room for a lecture and “old-school” slides from photographs taken by Bruce during his decades of studying these beautiful birds of prey. He will review biology, species identification, and habitat for our local owls. You will learn to identify owl species by silhouette and their unique calls.
Class breaks from 3:30 to 6:00 pm between the classroom and walking portion of class, so you can grab an early dinner nearby during the break. You will meet again for an evening of nocturnal searching in the wooded areas at the Elkhorn Slough Reserve, listening for their hoots and calls, and looking for their telltale glowing eyes amongst the trees!

Details about the location of the evening walk will be provided in class. Students should dress warm, wear comfortable walking shoes, and bring a flashlight. Note: flashlights will be pointed at the ground for safe walking and will not be shone upwards; we don’t want to disturb the owls in their natural habitat!
