Spring wildflowers are here! Join an experienced science illustrator for a guided field illustration experience and learn how to draw in the field and record the details of plants and flowers. Weather conditions on the Central Coast will guide Megan's exact location choice within the UCSC Fort Ord Natural Reserve to assure you'll have the chance to observe some of the most amazing native wildflowers in the region! You will learn about flower anatomy, practice field sketching and painting techniques, and practice observational drawing from live plants in their environment. You will learn to identify characteristics like growth habit, leaf shape and arrangement, as well as flower shape, color, and arrangement, and how to capture light and shadow to create form. You will build up to a more in-depth study of a plant or flower using watercolor. You will have time to complete three drawings or sketches using three different techniques, and gain skills using pencil, gouache, and watercolor on various papers.
Your materials fee covers some supplies, including watercolor paint specially selected by Megan for nature illustrations and artist-grade 100% cotton rag watercolor paper. You are also required to bring supplies to class. Please see the online class listing for details about what supplies are covered by the materials fee, what you need to bring to class, what to wear, a link and directions to the meeting place, and a link to a required waiver.

There will be some walking, about a half mile or so. You will be walking on well-established trails on sandy soils, and the walk is easy to moderately strenuous.
