Come experience the joy of plein air watercolor painting (painting outside and on-site) at different venues on the Central Coast. Plein air painting gives the painter a multi-sensory awareness of the subject, which can translate into a process chock-full of inspiration. When you are in your landscape, you can hear the sounds, smell the scents and feel the warm breeze that you are painting!
Bonni will demonstrate techniques and strategies that simplify and demystify this unique experience. Explore the boundless possibilities that painting en plein air offers while experimenting with shape, color, design and flair!

Whether you are a seasoned painter or a novice, painting outside will add a new dimension to your work. Demonstration and instruction will be given at the beginning of every class relating to design, approach and interpretation.

All levels welcome. No experience necessary!

The first class will meet in front of the Sesnon House on Cabrillo’s Aptos campus. Future field locations will be detailed at that first class meeting.

Please bring a comfortable portable chair.

For additional class information about what students need to purchase, including a list of required tools, equipment, supplies, please see the special notice.

Please read:  Materials and Supplies:

Welcome to the wonderful world of watercolor! In addition to painting materials bring whatever you need to be comfortable outside - hats, drinking water, snacks, sunscreen, etc. You will need a portable, foldable chair to sit on, painting water supply and a container in which to put your water. If you have an easel, bring it.

THIS IS A SUGGESTED LIST - you are welcome to use any watercolor materials you prefer. If you have none or want to know what my tools are, here they are.

Palette - I use a simple $10 - $15 foldable field palette.
Watercolor paper - I suggest you use 140 lb. cold pressed Fabriano Artistico full sheets and then cut them into quarters. You can get 4 pieces large pieces or 8 smaller pieces out of it. Arches is good, too. I have found the full sheets to be better quality than the pads. Another option is using a field book - I like the Pentalic 11" X17" field books that Lenz Arts carries.
Board to paint on and clamps or tape to affix it. If you have a field book you don't need a board.
Brushes - I primarily use a #12 round, sometimes a #6 round.
Pencil(s), eraser to draw your image on the paper.
Paint - Windsor-Newton, Daniel Smith & Graham are excellent tube paints. The starred paints are the most important. I will use others from time to time but this is my basic palette. Also, Windsor-Newton makes a traveling kit with palette with 12 half pans which is designed for painting outside and I've found works quite well.
