ClassGraphic What tales do you want to tell with images? Printmaking is a process of mirror images and surprise, making it the perfect medium for the playful, puzzling, and mysterious.  Explore the many ways drama and impact can be accomplished through the simple use of black and white, and the skillful use of a variety of tools and the specific marks they make. You will view examples by various printmakers, discussing styles, technique, and imagery. As you create your images Melissa will discuss contrasting or subtle textures and patterns, as well as the consideration of a light source, and how they play a part in achieving a strong and compelling result.
You will get hands-on practice with carving tools, and learn how to use them, as you practice mark-making, inking, and lining up your paper for a centered print. You will have time to finish at least one black and white linoleum block print, and make a small edition, and will gain skill and confidence to carve, ink, and print your own linoleum block prints at home.
You will need to bring one or two sketches or photos to use as the basis for your prints. It’s important that they be copies of the original sketch or photo, as they will be physically altered in the transfer process. We will be working with blocks that are 5” x 7”, your choice as to vertical or horizontal orientation. Please wear casual clothing that can get dirty, bring an apron or smock, lunch, and a drink.
