Learn about pastel technique and materials as you explore three unique styles of artists active from the 18th through 21st centuries. Your first piece will be inspired by the bold coloration of California’s Wayne Thiebaud, (imagine his cakes with rich colorful contours and contrasting backgrounds) to create our own personalized pastel cake still life. Next, you will explore the rhythmic approach of Cezanne with his apples and pears and unique cubist perspective. In your still life, you may also include your favorite spring fruit or flower. In the last session you will follow the classical approach of 18th century Chardin with the use of subtle gray tones to build a centered peaceful, deeper space pastel still life within a basket or bowl. The last session will conclude with a group sharing of your work. You will leave with several beautiful pastel studies perfect for gifts or the possibility of creating personalized cards from pieces that you photograph.
Basic drawing skills are required and instruction is geared to support creativity for all skill levels.
