Join an experienced science illustrator at the UCSC Fort Ord Natural Reserve for a guided field illustration experience and learn how to draw in the field and record the details of various organisms. This reserve is not widely open to the public so this is a unique opportunity to explore this rare habitat and see the plant and wildlife species that depend largely on the reserve for their survival. Weather conditions on the Central Coast will guide Megan's exact location choice within the reserve to ensure you'll have the chance to observe some of the most amazing native plants and flowers in the region! You will learn about field sketching techniques and practice observational drawing from live plants in their environment. You will learn to identify characteristics like growth habit, leaf shape and arrangement, as well as flower shape, color, and arrangement. You will build up to a more in-depth study of a plant or flower using watercolor. You will have time to complete three drawings or sketches using three different techniques, and gain skills using pencil, gouache, and watercolor on various papers.
Your materials fee covers supplies chosen by the instructor specifically for nature illustration, which are detailed in the online class listing. You are also required to bring some basic supplies to class. Please see the online class listing for important details about what supplies you need to bring to class, what supplies are provided, what to wear, and a link and map for the meeting place.

There will be some walking, about three miles or so. You will be walking on well-established trails on sandy soils, and the walk is easy to moderately strenuous.
