This class is meant for experienced fly fishers and is scheduled just in time to hone skills needed for a successful 2026 opening week for fly-fishing! This class is perfect if you are thinking of taking up fly fishing again after not fly fishing for some time; you listened to a friend's story of fly fishing in the Sierras and the memory of that magic feeling of hooking up to a wild trout still occupies your thoughts; it's time to brush up on your skills and check out your fly fishing gear for the season opener.  This class offers experienced fly fishers the opportunity to brush up on casting skills, revisit how to tie specific knots needed to ensure landing your trophy trout, and to hone the predator/prey hunting instincts needed to net wary, wild trout. You will analyze your casting stroke and improve loops needed to land your fly within striking distance of a butter yellow brown.  Tim will also review new casting strokes for double handed rods that are now used for single handed rods. This will enable you to reach further into the water!
Tim will also talk about our environmental responsibilities to the lands we fish to ensure future generations can enjoy the pristine wilds that hold our trout.

Classes meet on Cabrillo’s campus on the weekday evening sessions. Saturday session will be held off-site at a local freshwater creek or river so you can put your classroom practice into action! The location for the Saturday sessions will be provided during your first evening class on campus and will be selected by Tim based on weather, current conditions, and access.

All of your required supplies and equipment, including fly rods, reels, fly line, leaders and tippet material will be provided for your use during class. If you have your own fly rods, reels, or fly lines you may bring them.

Your materials fee covers the rental of your equipment, courtesy of Santa Cruz Fly Fishing Club.

This class is designed for people with some fly fishing experience, or who have taken Tim’s “Intro to the Fine Art of Fly Fishing” class.
