« back to classes page
For over 25 years Kuumbwa's Summer Jazz Camp has been a destination for dedicated young musicians to learn about the thrilling creativity and limitless possibilities of jazz. Through playing, studying, listening, and collaborating, this camp will help students grow as jazz musicians. Campers will receive one-on-one and group instruction by professional music educators and will develop key musicianship skills for live performance, basic improvisation, soloing, phrasing, collaboration, and proficiency in music theory.

All students are required to know at least 3 major scales and have experience with their instrument. In addition, guitarists and pianists must have the ability to read standard chord symbols and preferably know their triads. Drummers must know standard jazz rhythms.

In order to participate students are required to complete a survey immediately after registration.  A link to the survey will be sent in your confirmation email. Through the survey parents/guardians provide information about musicianship, and skill level, which allows us to assign students one of two potential time slots within their selected session. Students may indicate a preference for time slots, but time slots are not guaranteed. The survey also allows the Kuumbwa team to send additional resources to campers specific to their instrument. The survey is essential and required, and failure to complete the survey will result in students not being assigned a time slot.

Time Slots:
  • Slot A: 9:00 - 11:00 am
  • Slot B: 12:00 - 2:00 pm

Before bringing your child to camp, please read through this list. Following these steps will help us assure that your child is safe, healthy, and has tons of fun at camp!
  • Please review the 2021 Summer In-Person Camp Information for Parents prior to registering for in-person camps for information about policies, procedures, and modifications to camps this summer.
  • Always send your child with a snack and a drink. Food = mood and we want campers to be at their best! No food is available on campus.
  • In addition to the health screening questions that are being posed, please be sure you have notified us of any behavioral or medical conditions we need to be aware of.
  • Campers must be checked in each day by a responsible adult who lives in the same household as the child so they can complete the daily health screening questionnaire. Adults must remain in their vehicles throughout the check-in/sign-out process to minimize contact.
  • Campers need to be signed out every day by the individuals who have been approved by a parent or legal guardian to pick them up, and are required to show a photo ID every day.
