« back to classes page

In one of his signature illuminating lectures, Sandy Lydon will describe the remarkable combination of leadership and foresight that brought the nameless and homeless junior college into Santa Cruz County and set off its transformation into the educational and cultural cornucopia we enjoy today.

Join us to learn the answers to these questions and more!

  • Why did the college select this particular site?
  • The college has an Aptos mailing address, but is it really in Aptos?
  • Who was Benjamin Franklin Porter and why was the property available for the college in 1959?
  • Why does the college now refer to part of the campus as the Porter-Sesnon House?
  • What is the connection between Monterey Peninsula College, Foothill College and Cabrillo?
  • What is “The Cabrillo Way” and what does that mean?
  • Who designed the original campus architecture and what were the seven original buildings?
  • The Cabrillo College mascot, “The Seahawk” was adopted in 1959. What is a Seahawk and where do they hang out?

After our Friday night lecture, we’ll come together again on Saturday afternoon for a walking tour of parts of the Cabrillo College campus and learn more of its history and “secret sites.” The two-hour guided tour is a mostly level walk at a gentle pace with some areas of stairs to negotiate.

This program is designed for adults aged 18+.
