ClassGraphic Printmaking is an easy, inexpensive and effective way to express ideas and share messages. Whether it’s a mantra, your favorite quote, or an inspirational statement, learn how to incorporate words and phrases along with images into your prints. Join Melissa to view examples by various printmakers, discussing technique, imagery, as well as choice and placement of lettering. You will explore the many ways drama and impact can be accomplished through the simple use of black and white, and the skillful use of a variety of tools and the specific marks they make. As you create your images we will discuss contrasting or subtle textures and patterns, the consideration of a light source, and how they play a part in achieving a strong and compelling result.

Learn how to use carving tools and get plenty of time for hands-on practice, and also practice mark-making and inking. You will gain skill and confidence to carve, ink, and print your own linoleum block prints at home, and will have time in class to create at least one black & white linoleum block print, and make a small edition of your prints.

Please be sure to bring one or two sketches or photos to use as the basis for your prints, along with a short phrase or quote of up to 5 words. Wear casual clothing that can get dirty, and bring an apron or smock.

Please remember to bring your materials fees with you to class.
