Explore the ancient technique of handmade chains, terminations, and unique clasps. These elegant, handmade chains can be worn alone, or as a complement to other jewelry. Traditional techniques will be presented with an overview of tools and materials specific to this fascinating technique. Learn the basics of shop safety, how to use a torch to fuse metal, the importance of wire gauge, dowel diameter ratios, precise fusing, shaping the links, weaving chains, and how to use a specially made draw plate specific to each chain. There will be frequent demonstrations, ample time to practice, and an opportunity to immerse yourself in this mesmerizing technique. After making a few specialty tools, and a variety of sample chains, you will have time to complete a bracelet. You will take home your chain samples, your set of specially made chain making tools, and the book “Classical Loop-in-Loop Chains and Their Derivatives,” and your completed bracelet!
Class is held in Cabrillo’s state-of-the-art small metals and jewelry lab. Please wear long pants and closed toe shoes, and please finish all food and drinks before class. Also be prepared to pull your hair back - safety first!
