« back to classes page
ClassGraphic Join an experienced science illustrator at the UCSC Fort Ord Natural Reserve for a guided field illustration experience and learn how to draw in the field and record the details of plants and flowers. This reserve is not open to the public so this is a unique opportunity to explore this rare habitat and see the plant and wildlife species that depend largely on the reserve for their survival. Weather conditions on the Central Coast will guide Megan's exact location choice within the reserve to ensure you'll have the chance to observe some of the most amazing native plants and flowers in the region!
You will learn about flower anatomy, practice field sketching and painting techniques, and practice observational drawing from live plants in their environment. You will learn to identify characteristics like growth habit, leaf shape and arrangement, as well as flower shape, color, and arrangement, and how to capture light and shadow to create form. You will build up to a more in-depth study of a plant or flower using watercolor. You will have time to complete three drawings or sketches using three different techniques, and gain skills using pencil, gouache, and watercolor on various papers.

Your materials fee covers supplies chosen by the instructor specifically for nature illustration. You are also required to bring some basic supplies to class.
There will be some walking, about three miles or so. You will be walking on well-established trails on sandy soils, and the walk is moderate to moderately strenuous.
