Experience the exciting craft of steel forging and toolmaking through demonstration and hands-on exercises in this weekend workshop. After instruction on the properties and characteristics of different metals, students work a forge and learn how to manipulate hot steel. Demonstrations of various hammer types and the applications of different anvil designs are given. Building and operation of both gas and coke-fired forges are discussed. Students are encouraged to develop their own direction and interests in forging and toolmaking as an art form.

In the Forging and Toolmaking course, experience through demonstration and hands-on exercises, the exciting craft of steel forging and toolmaking. After instruction on the properties and characteristics of different metals (basic metallurgy), students work a forge and learn how to manipulate hot steel.

Demonstrations of various hammer types and the applications of different anvil designs are given. Building and operation of both gas and coke-fired forges are discussed. Students are encouraged to develop their own direction and interests in forging and toolmaking as an art form.

LUNCH: You may want to bring bag lunches, beverages and snacks for energy if you prefer not to leave the studio for lunch.

COME PREPARED! Please follow the instructions below to come to class prepared. Each participant must have

Kevlar gloves are best, but will likely have to be purchased online. Thin leather gloves, unlined, (cowhand style) are a good option if you cannot get Kevlar.

Appropriate clothing. You will be forging with hot steel and coal fires. Dress appropriately. Do not wear shorts or flammable fabrics, such as polyester or nylon. Also, do not wear open-toed shoes/sandals.
