Beautiful fabric or a favorite piece of clothing can be hard to part with and this workshop may be your solution! Learn techniques and design concepts for deconstructing well-loved clothing and creating a new item - that is not a piece of clothing! In the spirit of reusing and re-purposing students will take apart an old piece of clothing, separate the pieces, apply surface design techniques to some, and then piece them back together to form a new item such as a bag, a book, a soft sculpture, or some other work of art. The shape, fade lines, and seams of the pieces from old clothing provide a rich starting point for a project that includes a variety of stitching and mending techniques, and may include found items.
We will cover block carving, printing, stenciling, as well as embroidery, stitching and mending techniques. Students will look at Japanese Boro textiles, Gee's Bend Quilts, and other creative reuse items and artwork for inspiration.
