Nocturnal Painting - Moonlight Mixed Media

ID : 6114
« back to classes page
ClassGraphic Explore the magic of nocturnal painting in this class that revolves around the April moon cycle. We’ll start within the studio, playing with a variety of palettes that work with the sky and earth shades under the cast of rosy dusk to indigo night. The way the moon reflects on water and filters through trees will be examined. Participants are invited to use pastels, acrylics, other water-based media, or combination of media. Critical for success is having deep rich pigment tones, and dark pastel or paint surfaces. Preparing a canvas or pastel surface with a dark water-based wash will be demonstrated. In the studio, we’ll review how night leads us into seeing color as value. We’ll set up our palette based on the relative values of colors. We’ll gather inspiration from the early 20th century Monterey Bay Tonalist School which frequently painted nocturnals a century ago.

For the 2nd and 3rd class meetings we will paint outdoors with views of the moonlight on the ocean, and at a local State Park with moonlit views of the forest. Locations and directions will be provided to students at the first class meeting. Our last class meeting will be back in the studio and we’ll put finishing touches on our plein air studies, strengthening values, colors, and light effects.

Drawing skills are highly recommended. This class involves walking on paths with uneven surfaces, and walking at night. Students should wear appropriate shoes, and be able to comfortably walk on paths and trails at night.

Please see the Extension Class Resources web page for a detailed list of required supplies, materials, and equipment needed for painting outdoors at night.
