Interested in developing a children’s book idea, or in becoming a children’s book illustrator? This class is a great introduction to the medium and the process. This class will focus on principles and techniques for creating illustrations that clearly communicate stories. In this class you will:

  • Learn ways to captivate children's minds and sustain their attention in order to enrich their reading experience.
  • Understand storyboarding, basic book structure and design, character development, and how style relates to content.
  • Learn to work effectively with designers, editors and, sometimes, directly with authors to create the best possible manuscript.
  • Learn Portfolio development, presentation, and self-promotion strategies.

Participants will begin by generating a short children’s story, followed by a survey of the fundamentals of illustrating for children's books. In the end you will have developed a new story, an 8 page book dummy and one fully illustrated two page spread! Participants will benefit from experiencing the whole process from beginning to end and by focusing on the core principles. These concepts can easily be applied to larger projects.

Participants must have some prior experience with image-making, and be open to development. You will be required to create a two page illustrated book spread. The instructor will be offering numerous demonstrations on methods for creating illustrations with collage, pen and ink, and watercolor. How you create your final illustration is up to you.
