For over 25 years Kuumbwa's Summer Jazz Camp has been a destination for dedicated young musicians to learn about the thrilling creativity and limitless possibility that is Jazz! Over nine days of study, listening, and collaboration this camp covers jazz, improvisation, and jazz appreciation, and will help students grow as musicians. Students will receive both one-on-one and group instruction by professional music educators in the state-of-the-art Cabrillo Performing Arts complex. The camp focuses on live performance, basic improvisation, theory, soloing concepts and phrasing, along with jazz history and appreciation.

We conclude the camp on the final Thursday with a student performance on the famous Kuumbwa Jazz Center stage!

Students are required to know at least 3 major scales and have experience with an instrument. Drummers must know standard jazz rhythms.
All students must complete the following survey after registration, in order to provide additional information about musicianship and skill level:

Please check the Class Resources web page for important information about what campers must bring to camp on the first day, and for a final day performance schedule.

Please read:  Before bringing your child to camp, please read through this list. Following these steps will help us assure that your child has tons of fun while at camp, and help us keep all of our campers safe! Always send your child with a snack and a drink. Food = mood, and we want campers to be at their best! Be sure you have notified us of any behavioral or medical conditions we need to be aware of. Campers will need to be signed out every day by the individuals who have been approved by parent or legal guardian to pick them up, and are required to show a photo ID each day. Alternative transportation arrangements can be made for parents who wish to approve campers to ride their bike, take the bus, or walk home from camp, by completing the Transportation Form found at This form must be completed and submitted no fewer than 5 business days prior to camp start. Please check the Summer Youth Program Parking Map and Policy, found at before bringing your camper on the first day. In order to protect the privacy and security of all minors on our campus, photographs by parents and family members in class are not permitted. Instructors and Extension staff often take photos and may share them with campers’ families via email once camp has concluded. Campers’ name tags will be removed for these photographs to respect and protect privacy. Please contact the Extension office directly if you do not want your child to be included in any photographs taken by our staff. Cell phones or hand held games may not be used during camps. Please let Extension know if there is anything we can do to be sure your camper is safe and has fun. We can be reached at 831-479-6331
