Oral Pathology: Preliminary Diagnosis and Developmental Abnormalities

Recognition of basic tissue reaction and lesions that occur in the mouth, jaws, and neck and formulation of differential diagnosis of lesions seen in the practice of dentistry.

Participants will understand it is their ethical and moral duty to provide each and every patient for whom they provide care a thorough intraoral/extraoral (Oral Cancer) examination. By having a strong understanding of Oral Pathology, the dental professional will serve the patient by recognizing deviations from normal and potentially life threatening lesions to determine a differential diagnosis in collaboration with the dental professionals with whom they work.

  1. Identify and describe the clinical manifestations of inflammation, wound healing, and other conditions of the head and neck region.

  2. Assess and categorize clinical signs and symptoms to a level that allows a differential diagnosis.

  3. Correlate the signs and symptoms of oral abnormalities with etiologic factors.

  4. Describe and identify common oral lesions.

  5. Determine whether referral for definitive diagnosis is needed.

  6. Conduct clear, tactful discussion of clinical manifestations of disease with patients and other health professionals.
