ClassGraphic Learn the papier-mache sculpture method used by the Lineras family of Mexico City, as you create your own papier-mache animal sculpture. The Linares family are practitioners of a craft known as “cartoneria,” which is the use of papier-mache to create hard sculpted objects. You will have the opportunity to see images of papier-mache art from Mexico, the Lineras family's fantastical creatures called Aljebries, examples of Donna's papier-mache work, as well as pieces created by her students. Then you will design and create a sculpture of an animal, such as a dog, cat, bird, fish, or any other critter you choose. Your finished piece will be approximately 12" x 12" x 12".  You will learn how to design and construct your form, apply the papier-mache pasted paper, then complete your piece by painting and decorating your unique sculpture.

During the first class meeting you will learn about the process and tradition, and Donna will offer a demonstration of construction, including tips on making horns, teeth, paws etc. There will be plenty of time to design and create your shape, and then you will take your piece home to dry. In the second class you will have time to complete the painting and decorating to bring your piece to life! You will go home with your finished papier-mache sculpture, a step-by-step chart for the process, and your new papier-mache skills to create many more at home!

All of the materials and supplies will be provided in class. Please wear clothes you can get messy in!

Please be sure to bring a photograph of the animal you wish to use, and a cardboard box large enough to carry your piece home between classes.
