After completing this course, program attendees should be able to:
  • Discuss the minimum standards for infection control as required by the DBC and DHBC
  • Describe the OSHA and Cal/OSHA regulations as they apply to dentistry
  • List the potential pathogens and the modes of transmission that can result in infections acquired in a dental practice setting
  • Discuss the strategies for preventing disease transmission in the dental practice setting
  • Describe the various strategies for dental healthcare workers to stay healthy in the workplace

The California Dental Practice Act and You 2024
California law requires that every dental professional is responsible for understanding and following the regulations and statutes governing the practice of dentistry. Violations can result in loss of license or discipline as well as criminal prosecution.

After completing this course, program attendees should be able to:
  • Describe the scope of practice for dentists, dental hygienists and registered dental assistants in California.
  • Describe all the aspects of the licensure process for oral health care providers in California.
  • Explain the differences between the law and standard of care as they relate to dentistry, dental hygiene and dental assisting.
  • Describe the mandated reporter requirements for child abuse and elder abuse.

Presenter Bio
Cathy Draper is a part time faculty member in the Biological and Health Sciences Division at Foothill College, associate faculty member at Cabrillo College Dental Hygiene and practiced clinical dental hygiene for over 40 years.
Cathy has presented continuing education programs on a variety of topics including oropharyngeal cancer, implant maintenance, and infection control. She has been a frequent contributor to a number of publications and is the current managing editor of the Journal of Dental Hygiene. Cathy was the recipient of the ADHA Award for Excellence in Dental Hygiene in 2020.
